Film medium for Enterobacteriaceae | Easy Plate EB Kikkoman
1. Introduction to Easy Plate
- Easy Plate is a convenient ready-to-use culture medium plate that requires no preparation or sterilization. Easy Plate is an easy-to-use alternative to traditional media preparation in the laboratory, saving time, effort, and reducing waste.
- Easy Plate EB is a dry medium plate product from Kikkoman Biochemifa (Japan), specifically designed for the detection and enumeration of Enterobacteriaceae in food, beverages, and pharmaceutical samples.
- Easy Plate has approximately 1/20 the volume of a traditional petri dish, saving space and allowing more tests to be performed in the same incubator. Easy Plate is supplied ready-to-use; after opening the package, simply add the suspension sample onto the medium and start incubation.
- Easy Plate EB contains a culture medium specially formulated for Enterobacteriaceae. This microbiological test kit contains Violet Red Bile Glucose (VRBG) medium and a cold-water-soluble gelling agent that makes colony counting easy. Colonies can be easily recognized within 24 ± 1 hours. Easy Plate EB is sold in packages of 100 tests, divided into 4 individual bags, each containing 25 tests. Shelf life is 18 months when unopened and stored at 2–8℃.
- The plate is designed as a dry medium sheet, pre-measured and ready-to-use without the need for media preparation or sterilization.

3. Principle
- When the test sample is applied to the surface of the plate, Enterobacteriaceae bacteria grow on the selective medium.
- During incubation, the target bacteria form characteristic colonies, usually with easily recognizable colors, thanks to biochemical indicators and specific enzyme reactions in the medium.
- The tester simply counts the colonies on the plate to determine bacterial density in the sample. Colonies appear distinctively colored and easy to distinguish within 24 hours.

- High correlation with VRBG agar has been confirmed for various food types.

- The gel medium contains the pH indicator neutral red (colonies appear red) and crystal violet, which makes EB colonies turn red.
4. Benefits
Compared to the traditional pour plate method, Easy Plate EB offers many outstanding benefits:
- Convenient and ready-to-use: No need for media preparation, sterilization, or cooling, saving time and labor.
- Easy to use: Simply apply 1 ml of test sample to the plate surface, then incubate under suitable conditions.
- Clear and easy-to-read results: Enterobacteriaceae colonies have distinctive colors, reducing misidentification with other microorganisms.
- High reliability: Validated according to international standards (AOAC, ISO, etc.), ensuring accuracy and reproducibility.
- Space-saving: Compact size, easy storage at room temperature, and less incubator space required.
- Safe and eco-friendly: Reduces plastic waste compared to conventional culture methods.
5. Applications
Easy Plate EB is widely used in microbiological testing, including:
- Food: meat, fish, milk, dairy products, vegetables, fruits, packaged foods…
- Beverages: purified water, mineral water, bottled water, sweetened drinks.
- Cosmetics and pharmaceuticals: quality control and compliance with microbiological safety standards.
- Production quality control: helping companies ensure food safety and comply with legal microbiological regulations.
