1. Intended use

The vitamin B3 (Niacin) test kit, VitaFast® Niacin, is a microbiological method for the quantification of total niacin (naturally occurring and added niacin) in food, animal feed and pharmaceutical products. The microbiological test system complies with international standards.

2. General information

- Niacin is extracted from a homogenised sample and the extract is diluted. The diluted extract and the standards are applied to the wells of a microtitre plate coated with Lactobacillus plantarum . Bacterial growth depends on the vitamin content of the sample or the standard.

- Lactobacillus plantarum belongs to the lactic acid bacteria and has an absolute growth requirement for niacin. This organism is therefore ideal for the quantification of niacin in food and food supplements. As a group, lactic acid bacteria are good candidates for vitamin analysis because of their genetic stability (resistance to mutation), their simple metabolic requirements, their ease of maintenance and their general safety as a non-pathogenic organism.
