Beta-agonists are a group of non-hormonal substances used in livestock feed to increase the proportion of lean meat (which is why they are also called muscle builders) and to reduce the proportion of fat. This group has no effect in transferring nutrients from fat formation to muscle formation. Zilpaterol is a β2-adrenergic agonist belonging to theBeta - agonist family. It is used to increase the size of cattle and the efficiency of feed conversion. Some recent studies show that zilpaterol causes a number of side effects in cattle. Recently, under pressure from countries that import large amounts of beef from the United States, the US Department of Agriculture USDA has had to add a programme certifying that beef is produced by a process that does not use beta-agonists, to help American beef cattle farmers export beef more easily.
