1. Intended use

RIDASCREEN®FAST Zearalenon (product code R5502) is an ELISA kit using a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of zearalenone in cereals and animal feed. The test has been validated with various cereal and compound feed matrices.

2. General information

The mycotoxin zearalenone is produced by fungi of the genus Fusarium. Zearalenone is a phytohormone which, besides its anabolic properties, exhibits mainly oestrogenic effects. Because of its oestrogenic properties, zearalenone can cause reproductive disorders in animals with clinical signs of hyperoestrogenism – an aspect of the disease reported mainly in pigs but also described in other species such as cattle, horses and sheep. The potential health risk to humans from this mycotoxin, taken up in food of plant or animal origin, has been widely discussed.
