Vitamin B8 test kit for food | VitaFast® Inositol

1. Intended use

The vitamin B8 (inositol) test kit, VitaFast® Inositol, is a microbiological method for the quantification of total inositol (added and naturally occurring inositol) in food, animal feed and pharmaceutical products. The microbiological test system complies with international standards.

2. General information

- Inositol is extracted from the sample and the extract is diluted. The diluted extract and the inositol test medium are pipetted into the wells of a microtitre plate coated with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. The growth of Saccharomyces cerevisiae depends on the supply of inositol. After the addition of inositol as a standard or as a sample compound, the yeast grows until the inositol is consumed.

- Saccharomyces cerevisiae belongs to the yeasts and has an absolute growth requirement for vitamin B6. This organism is therefore ideal for the quantification of pyridoxine in food and food supplements. As a group, yeasts are good candidates for vitamin analysis because of their genetic stability (resistance to mutation), their simple metabolic requirements, their ease of maintenance and their general safety as a non-pathogenic organism.
