1. Intended use

The Vitamin B6 test kit, VitaFast® Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxin), is a microbiological method for the quantification of total vitamin B6 (naturally occurring and added vitamin B6) in food, animal feed and pharmaceutical products. The microbiological test system complies with international standards.

2. General information

- Vitamin B6 (Pyridoxin) is extracted from a homogenised sample and the extract is diluted. The diluted extract and the standards are applied to the wells of a microtitre plate coated with Saccharomyces cerevisiae. Bacterial growth depends on the vitamin content of the sample or the standard.

- Saccharomyces cerevisiae belongs to the yeast bacteria and has an absolute growth requirement for vitamin B6. This organism is therefore ideal for the quantification of pyridoxin in food and food supplements. As a group, the yeast bacteria are good candidates for vitamin analysis because of their genetic stability (resistance to mutation), their simple metabolic requirements, their ease of maintenance and their general safety as a non-pathogenic organism.
