1. Intended use

The VitaFast® Pantothenic Acid vitamin B5 (pantothenic acid) test kit is a microbiological method for the quantitative determination of total pantothenic acid (natural and added pantothenic acid) in food, animal feed and pharmaceutical products. The microbiological test system complies with international standards.

2. General information

- Pantothenic acid is extracted from a homogenised sample and the extract is diluted. The diluted extract and the standards are applied to the wells of a microplate coated with Lactobacillus plantarum. Bacterial growth depends on the vitamin content of the sample or standard.

- Lactobacillus plantarum belongs to the lactic acid bacteria and has an absolute growth requirement for pantothenic acid. The organism is therefore ideal for the quantification of pantothenic acid in food and food supplements. As a group, lactic acid bacteria are good candidates for vitamin analysis because of their genetic stability (resistance to mutation), simple metabolic requirements, ease of maintenance and general safety as a non-pathogenic organism.
