1. Intended use

The Vitamin B2 test kit, VitaFast® Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin), is a microbiological method for the quantification of total vitamin B2 (naturally occurring and added vitamin B2) in food, animal feed and pharmaceutical products. The microbiological test system complies with international standards.

2. General information

- Vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) is extracted from a homogenised sample and the extract is diluted. The diluted extract and the standards are applied to the wells of a microtitre plate coated with Lactobacillus rhamnosus. Bacterial growth depends on the vitamin content of the sample or the standard.

- Lactobacillus rhamnosus belongs to the lactic acid bacteria and has an absolute growth requirement for vitamin B2 (Riboflavin). This organism is therefore ideal for the quantification of vitamin B2 (Riboflavin) in food and food supplements. As a group, lactic acid bacteria are good candidates for vitamin analysis because of their genetic stability (resistance to mutation), their simple metabolic requirements, their ease of maintenance and their general safety as a non-pathogenic organism.
