What is tetracycline?

It is a type of antibiotic used to treat a number of diseases caused by infection. These diseases include acne, cholera, brucellosis, plague, malaria and syphilis.

Common side effects may include vomiting, diarrhoea, rash and loss of appetite

In 1948 aureomycin (chlortetracycline) was isolated by Duggan. It was the first antibiotic of the tetracycline group. In Germany tetracycline, chlortetracycline and oxytetracycline are approved for use in veterinary medicine. This can therefore pose a health risk to consumers (antibiotic resistance or poisoning).

Tetracycline residues (parent compound and 4-epimer) are restricted under EU law. Specifically, Commission Regulation (EU) No 37/2010 sets the following limits: 100 µg/kg (ppb) in muscle and in milk.
