General information

Sulfonamides are widely used as feed additives, mainly for fattening calves and pigs. In combination with dihydrofolate reductase inhibitors such as trimethoprim, tetroxoprim or pyrimethamine, sulfonamides are also used in veterinary medicine to treat intestinal infections, mastitis, pneumonia and other diseases. Sulfonamide residues can therefore occur in foods of animal origin such as meat and milk. In particular, the transfer of the carcinogenic sulfamethazine represents a threat to human health. The EU has established a maximum residue limit (MRL) for all substances of the sulfonamide group of 100 g / kg (ppb) in muscle, fat, liver, kidney and milk.
