Besides β-lactam antibiotics in veterinary medicine, streptomycin is one of the antibiotics used most widely in the treatment of tuberculosis and bacterial infections. Therefore, residues of streptomycin can occur in foods of animal origin such as meat, eggs and milk. If the withdrawal period (time off medication) is not sufficiently respected, high levels of streptomycin are toxic and affect the ears and kidneys. Chronic human exposure to low concentrations of streptomycin can cause allergies, impair the intestinal bacterial flora and lead to antimicrobial resistance.
