1. Intended use

RIDASCREEN® Peanut (product code R6811) is an ELISA kit using a sandwich enzyme immunoassay developed for the quantitative analysis of peanut or peanut protein allergen residues in foodstuffs. Because of the large number of different food products, the following samples were tested to represent different product groups during assay development: breakfast cereals, granola bars, biscuits, ice cream and chocolate. It can be assumed that this test is also suitable for analysing other foods; this must be checked by the user. The system is specific for roasted peanut and detects raw or lightly roasted peanut.

2. General information

- Although peanut (Arachis hypogaea) belongs to the legume family rather than the tree nuts, its flavour and typical consumption resemble those of tree nuts. Arguably, peanut is one of the most popular “nuts” worldwide. Peanut is a very common ingredient in chocolate products and is also used as a snack and in baked goods such as biscuits. Peanut is also one of the five foods that most frequently cause food allergy. Peanut allergy is one of the most severe allergies and can lead to life-threatening anaphylaxis. Consuming less than one milligram of peanut can trigger an allergic reaction in highly sensitive individuals. Labelling of products containing peanut is therefore important and mandatory in the United States and the European Union as well as in many other countries. The main threat to sensitive individuals is peanut contamination in foods that are supposed to be peanut-free (for example traces of peanut in chocolate that should not contain peanut).

- It is therefore important to test foods that may have been contaminated during production for unintended traces of peanut. The allergen can be present as an ingredient or as contamination in raw and processed products. Under Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011, peanut and peanut products must be declared on food labels. Similar regulations exist in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
