1. Intended use

RIDASCREEN® Chinolone/Quinolones (code R3113) is an ELISA kit using a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of chinolone antibiotic residues in eggs, meat (beef, pork, lamb, chicken, turkey), fish and shrimp.

2. General information

- Gyrase inhibitors are divided into four subgroups. Most chinolones belong to the fluoroquinolone subgroup, which has a fluoro group attached to the central ring system, usually at position 6. Fluoroquinolones belong to the second-generation chinolones. Some of them are approved as veterinary antibiotics for food-producing animals. Fluoroquinolones are broad-spectrum antibiotics. They are used frequently in veterinary medicine, especially for cattle, pigs and poultry. The use of fluoroquinolones has increased over the years because a large amount of fluoroquinolones is used to prevent infectious diseases, especially in poultry, pig and fish/shrimp farming.

- The widespread use in food-producing animals has produced antimicrobial resistance. This led to the amendment of Council Regulation (EEC) No 2377/90 and the introduction of MRLs (maximum residue limits) for certain fluoroquinolones.
