What is progesterone?

a hormone secreted by the female animal (for example a cow) during ovulation, and it can be detected in milk samples. Progesterone rises and falls at different phases of the reproductive cycle. For most of the cycle, progesterone is at a higher level and falls a few days before the female comes into oestrus. The progesterone level then stays at its lowest for a few days. After that progesterone rises to a peak before falling sharply again a few days before the next oestrus.
Because the amount of progesterone follows a regular cycle, the progesterone content can be measured to check the likelihood of the next oestrus and to determine the best time for insemination. The progesterone can be used to support veterinarians and farmers with the reproductive status of livestock.
