Nitrofuran AOZ antibiotic residue ELISA test kit

1. Intended use

RIDASCREEN® Nitrofuran (AOZ) (product code R3703) is an ELISA kit for competitive enzyme immunoassay, the quantitative analysis of Nitrofuran AOZ antibiotic residues in shrimp, meat (chicken, pork, beef), liver (beef and pork), fish, eggs and milk.

2. General information

- Nitrofurans are synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotics, commonly used in animal husbandry because of their excellent antibacterial properties and pharmacokinetics. They are also used as growth promoters during shrimp, poultry and pig farming. Long-term animal studies have shown that the parent compounds and their metabolites have carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. This led to the ban on the use of nitrofurans for the treatment of animals used for food production. In 1993, the EU banned the use of the nitrofurans furaltadone, nitrofurantoin and nitrofurazone for animals used as a food source, and in 1995 the use of furazolidone was also banned.

- The analysis of nitrofurans is based on the detection of the tissue-bound metabolites of nitrofurans. The parent compounds are difficult to detect accurately because they are metabolised very quickly after treatment. However, the nitrofuran metabolites bound to tissue persist for a long time after administration and they are used to detect the abuse of nitrofurans.

- Before analysis, the metabolites must be derivatised by incubation with 2-Nitrobenzaldehyde to NP-AHD, NP-AMOZ, NP-AOZ and NP-SEM.
