1. Intended use

RIDASCREEN® Nitrofuran (AMOZ) (product code R3722) is an ELISA test kit used for a competitive enzyme immunoassay to determine quantitatively the antibiotic residue AMOZ in shrimp, fish, meat and poultry.

2. General information

- Nitrofurans are synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotics, usually used in livestock farming because of their antibacterial properties and excellent pharmacokinetics. They are also used as growth promoters in shrimp, poultry and pig farming. Long-term animal studies have shown that the parent compounds and their metabolites have carcinogenic and mutagenic properties. This led to the ban on the use of nitrofurans for the treatment of food-producing animals. In 1993 the EU banned the use of the nitrofurans furaltadone, nitrofurantoin and nitrofurazone in food-producing animals, and in 1995 the use of furazolidone was banned as well.

- The analysis of nitrofurans is based on the detection of tissue-bound nitrofuran metabolites. The parent compounds are difficult to detect accurately because they are metabolised very quickly after treatment. However, the nitrofuran metabolites bound to tissue persist for a long time after administration, and they are used to detect the abuse of nitrofurans.

- Before analysis, the metabolites must be derivatised by incubation with 2-Nitrobenzaldehyde to form NP-AHD, NP-AMOZ, NP-AOZ and NP-SEM.
