Nitrofuran AHD antibiotic residue ELISA test kit

1. Intended use

RIDASCREEN® Nitrofuran (AHD) (product code R3713) is an ELISA kit using a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of the nitrofurantoin metabolite AHD in shrimp and fish.

2. General information

- Nitrofurans are synthetic broad-spectrum antibiotics, often used in livestock farming because of their antibacterial properties and excellent pharmacokinetics. They have also been used as growth promoters when farming shrimp, poultry and pigs. Long-term animal studies have shown that the parent compounds and their metabolites are carcinogenic and mutagenic. This led to a ban on the use of nitrofurans to treat animals used for food production. In 1993 the EU banned the use of the nitrofurans furaltadone, nitrofurantoin and nitrofurazone in food-producing animals, and in 1995 the use of furazolidone was banned as well.

- The analysis of nitrofurans is based on detecting the tissue-bound metabolites of nitrofurans. The parent compounds are difficult to detect accurately because they are metabolised very quickly after treatment. However, nitrofuran metabolites bound to tissue persist for a long time after administration and they are used to detect the misuse of nitrofurans.

- Before analysis, the metabolites must be derivatised by incubation with 2-Nitrobenzaldehyde to NP-AHD, NP-AMOZ, NP-AOZ and NP-SEM.
