1. Intended use

The hazelnut allergy rapid test kit (product code BLH704-15) with the hook line effect included from bioavid is an immunochromatographic assay for the sensitive and qualitative detection of hazelnut residues on surfaces (for example, swab testing to control hygiene in food production lines), during cleaning and water processing (CIP water) and in food samples. The integrated hook line helps to prevent false-negative interpretation of highly positive samples.

2. General information

- Hazelnut (Corylus avellana) is one of the most common tree nuts worldwide. In general, hazelnuts are used in many food industries. Hazelnuts are a very common ingredient in chocolate products and are also used as a snack and in baked products such as biscuits. They are also used as an addition to sauces, salads or for preparing fish dishes. Hazelnut is one of the eight foods that most commonly cause food allergy

- In Central Europe, more than 90% of hazelnut allergy cases are associated with pollen allergy. Consuming a few milligrams of hazelnut can trigger an allergic reaction in sensitised people. Labelling products containing hazelnut is therefore very important and mandatory in the United States and the European Union as well as in many other countries. The main threat for sensitised people is contamination of hazelnut in foods that are declared as not containing hazelnut (for example traces of hazelnut in chocolate that should not contain hazelnut). It is therefore important to test foods that may have been contaminated during production for unintended traces of hazelnut..

- According to Regulation (EU) No. 1169/2011, hazelnut and products thereof must be declared on food labels. Equivalent regulations also exist in the United States, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
