1. Intended use

RIDASCREEN® FAST Fumonisin ECO (product code R5603) is a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative determination of fumonisin toxin residues in maize and animal feed.

2. General information

- Fumonisins are carcinogenic metabolites that are neurotoxic, hepatotoxic and pulmotoxic; they are produced by Fusarium moniliforme, a mould that grows characteristically on maize.

- The toxic concentration of fumonisin varies considerably between animal species. A concentration of about 5 – 10 mg/kg fumonisin in feed causes neurotoxic effects in horses. In pigs, ingestion of 4 – 16 mg/kg body weight can lead to liver cirrhosis, and more than 16 mg/kg body weight can lead to pulmonary oedema. Chickens tolerate higher fumonisin concentrations in feed, up to 75 mg/kg. Cattle appear not to be sensitive to high fumonisin concentrations.
