1. Intended use

RIDASCREEN® SET Total (product code R4105) is a sandwich enzyme immunoassay ELISA kit for the combined detection of the enterotoxins A, B, C, D and E of Staphylococcus aureus in liquid and solid foods as well as in bacterial cultures.

2. General information

- The main cause of food poisoning is the enterotoxin of Staphylococcus aureus alongside Salmonella poisoning. Among the strains of Staphylococcus aureus, other Staphylococci species such as S. hyicus and S. intermedius can produce one or more heat-stable proteins with enterotoxin-like activity.

- It is generally considered that 5 x 105 Staphylococcus aureus cells producing enterotoxin per gram of food are needed to cause poisoning. Other studies, however, show that only 100 – 200 ng of staphylococcal enterotoxin can cause the symptoms of food poisoning.

- Staphylococcal enterotoxin poisoning is often associated with pasta, processed meat products, ham, baked goods, poultry meat products, fish, fish products, milk, dairy products, ice cream, egg products, salads, pastries and fillings as well as preparations made from these food products. The enterotoxins of serological groups A, B, C, D and E are very significant.
