1. Intended use

RIDASCREEN® Aflatoxin M1 (product code R1121) is a competitive enzyme immunoassay for the quantitative analysis of aflatoxin M1 toxin residues in milk and milk powder.

2. General information

- Aflatoxins are highly toxic, carcinogenic metabolites of the moulds Aspergillus flavus and Aspergillus parasiticus. Aflatoxin M1 is produced as a metabolite of aflatoxin B1. It is excreted with the milk after lactating cows are fed feed containing aflatoxin B1. Because aflatoxin M1 is relatively stable during pasteurisation, comprehensive routine testing is required not only of the processed raw materials but also of the final products.

- Since 1 January 1999 there has been a uniform EU-wide limit for aflatoxin residues. For aflatoxin M1 the limit is fixed at 0.05 μg/L (50 ppb).
