1. Intended use

The coconut allergy rapid test kit (code BLH700-15) with the hook line effect included from bioavid is an immunochromatographic assay for the sensitive and qualitative detection of coconut residues on surfaces (for example, swab testing to control hygiene in food production lines), during cleaning and water processing (CIP water) and in food samples. The hook line effect prevents false-negative interpretation of highly positive samples.

2. General information

- The coconut palm originates from tropical regions. Coconuts can be bought fresh or as coconut milk, coconut water, creamed coconut or desiccated coconut. They can be used as an ingredient in baking, ice cream, breakfast cereals and confectionery. They are widely used in Southeast Asian cooking. Products derived from coconut are also added to many foods (including pastries and chocolate), some infant formula products as well as cosmetics and personal care products. Coconut contamination in food can cause allergic reactions in susceptible people.

- Food production lines must be free of residues to prevent these allergic reactions. The effectiveness of cleaning can be verified by using the lateral flow method to detect coconut. In 2006, the FDA added coconut as a tree nut to the list of major food allergens (Food Allergen Labeling and Consumer Protection Act of 2004 (FALCPA)).
