What is cholesterol?

Cholesterol is the most important of the animal sterols. It is an important component of the cell membranes of higher organisms and a precursor of a range of steroid hormones. Cholesterol is found in all animal fats and is an important component of egg yolk. It is found in foods such as meat, poultry, seafood and dairy products. Because its content is relatively stable, it is often used to determine the egg content of foods such as confectionery products, noodles and liqueurs containing egg yolk.

Harmful effects of cholesterol

A diet high in cholesterol can cause heart, liver and kidney diseases. The daily amount should not exceed 300 mg.
