The cashew allergy rapid test kit (product code BLH710-15) with the hook line effect included, from bioavid, is an immunochromatographic assay for the sensitive and qualitative detection of cashew residues on surfaces (for example swab testing to control hygiene in food production lines), in cleaning and water treatment (CIP water) and in food samples. The integrated hook line effect prevents false-negative interpretation of high positive samples.

- The cashew tree (Anacarddium occidentale) produces the cashew apple and the cashew nut. Cashew nuts contain a protein fraction of about. 18% and a fat content of approximately. 45 %. Despite the high fat content, cashew nuts are very rarely used to produce oil. Many proteins in cashew nuts are heat resistant, so they are stable through different production processes. 60% of cashew nuts are used as snacks, the remaining 40% are used in confectionery. Like many other “tree nuts”, the cashew is botanically not a true nut. However, because its composition and flavour are similar to true nuts, the cashew is regarded as a nut in the culinary sense and is often called a tree nut. Cashew is closely related to pistachio, another culinary nut.
- Cashew protein can be present as an ingredient or as a contaminant in raw and processed products. Undeclared cashew is a potential risk for cashew-allergic patients. Tree nut allergy is the largest allergy worldwide. Alongside walnut, cashew is the second most common tree nut allergy. Cashew is a very potent allergen and allergic patients must avoid it.
- Food production lines and the food itself must be free of residues to prevent these allergic reactions. The effectiveness of cleaning can be verified by using a lateral flow method to detect cashew. Under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, cashew must be declared on food labels because it can cause allergic reactions. Similar regulations exist in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
