1. Intended use

The peanut allergy rapid test kit (catalogue number BLH706-15) with the integrated hook line from bioavid is an immunochromatographic assay for the sensitive and qualitative detection of peanut residues on surfaces (for example swab testing for hygiene control in food production lines), in cleaning and water treatment (CIP water) and in food samples. The integrated hook line helps prevent false negative interpretation of highly positive samples.

2. General information

- Although the peanut (Arachis hypogaea) belongs to the legume family and not to the nuts, its flavour and the way it is normally eaten are similar to tree nuts. Arguably, the peanut is one of the most popular “nuts” worldwide. The peanut is a very common ingredient in chocolate products and is also used as a snack and in baked products such as biscuits. In 2017, 47 million tonnes of peanuts were produced worldwide, which shows the importance of the peanut as a food product.
- At 25%, the protein content of the peanut is very high. Many of these proteins are known to be allergens, such as arachins and conarachins, which are present in relatively high amounts. The peanut is also one of the 5 foods that most frequently cause food allergy.
- Peanut allergy is one of the most severe allergies and can lead to life-threatening anaphylactic shock. Consuming less than one milligram of peanut can trigger an allergic reaction in people who are very sensitive. Labelling products that contain peanut is therefore very important and mandatory in the United States and the European Union as well as in many other countries. The main threat to sensitive people is peanut contamination in foods that are assumed not to contain peanut (for example traces of peanut in chocolate, which must not contain peanut). It is therefore important to test food that may have been contaminated during production for the presence of unintended traces of peanut.
- If the allergen is present in the ingredients of a product, it must be declared on the food label under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011. Similar rules also exist in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
