1. Intended use

The almond allergy rapid test kit (code BLH701-15) with the hook line effect supplied by bioavid is an immunochromatographic assay for the sensitive detection and qualitative determination of almond residues on surfaces (for example a swab test for hygiene control in food production lines), in cleaning and water treatment (CIP water) and in food samples. The integrated hook line effect prevents false-negative interpretation of high-positive samples.

2. General information

- Almond ( Amygdalys communis) is one of the most common tree nuts worldwide. Almonds are consumed as a snack and are a common ingredient of many cakes. Almonds are available as sweet almonds with a rough, cinnamon-brown skin, used mainly for raw consumption as well as for baking and for the production of almond cakes and liqueurs. Before consumption, almonds are boiled in hot water so that the slightly bitter skin can be removed easily. Once dried again, they can be processed into flour or ground and split. Apricot kernels are used in part as a cheaper substitute for almonds (for example perzipan instead of marzipan). Apricot kernels commonly cross-react in immuno-based almond tests and cannot be distinguished from the almond allergen.
- Almonds belong to the Prunidea family and are closely related to plums, cherries, apricots and peaches. In general, the allergen can be present as an ingredient or as contamination in raw and cooked products. Nuts in general are strong allergens and can cause mild skin reactions and gastrointestinal symptoms. In some very sensitive allergic patients, anaphylactic shock can occur. Almonds have a high protein content of about 25 %. Approximately 95% of almond proteins are water-soluble, which makes them a very dangerous cross-contaminant in production lines. To date there is no cure for food allergy. It is therefore all the more important to avoid cross-contamination, which can lead to allergic patients unintentionally consuming almonds.
- Under Regulation (EU) No 1169/2011, almonds must be declared on food labels because they can trigger allergic reactions. Similar regulations also exist in the USA, Canada, Australia and New Zealand.
