Howie Clean It program - The Meaning of Cleanliness
ISSA has launched the Rethink What Clean Means. They worked together to highlight the critical importance of cleaning and to help businesses raise their cleanliness standards in the United States.
Howie Mandel said: “If there is one thing everyone knows about me, it is that I am a mean cleanliness guy“. However, what cleanliness means can mean completely different things to different people. Knowing that we have experts, such as ISSA. Having cleanliness standards in place gives me peace of mind when I am in a hotel, a restaurant or performing at large venues. ”

To help raise awareness of the importance of cleanliness. Mandel starred in a unique series of online videos, “Howie Clean It”. He takes viewers on a journey to discover the hidden dirt in spaces that look clean. With the help of ISSA experts, Mandel has inspired viewers to learn more about the meaning of cleanliness, share what they have learned on social media and look for the Rethink Clean badge to find businesses committed to cleanliness.

New survey results reveal Americans' perspective on the level of cleanliness

A new YouGov1 survey, commissioned by ISSA, provides an in-depth look at how Americans feel about cleaning and how cleanliness itself affects businesses across the country:

Americans care deeply about Business Cleanliness. About three in five respondents (57%) care a lot about how clean their businesses are. Nearly three in five (59%) are more aware of surface sanitation when they are in public places. And more than half (51%) say they would visit a business more often if they were given proof that their premises have been properly sanitized.

Americans Want to Know If a Business Is Clean (And Will Say So If It Isn't).
Most respondents (82%) would report a business that is not cleaned to their standards. More than half (54%) would no longer visit that business/ store. One third (33%) would complain to friends / family about the location. And 29% would speak to the manager about the poor hygiene they experience.

Rethinking What Clean Means in 2022

Although ISSA survey results show that Americans value cleanliness. But most of them still need help to understand what is clean and what is not. The cleanliness of a business or public space is determined by many factors, but smell is NOT one of them. However, three in four respondents believe/ or are not sure that if a business looks clean, it is a clean business. Americans also do not know about cleaning certifications and what they mean - more than half (52%) have not heard of cleaning certifications.

This first campaign delivers a wake-up call to not only raise consumer expectations and let them know that a higher standard is possible, but also to help businesses profit from cleaning products / services.

“Now more than ever, we are laser focused on the issues of sanitation, germs and keeping everything clean. But when we go out into public spaces, we often only "hope" that these spaces are cleaned to the highest standard, ”John Barrett, CEO of ISSA said.
“As the global cleaning industry association, we want everyone to know that nobody compromises on cleanliness. There are standards, courses and even certifications to ensure that cleaning teams, facility managers and others are equipped with the best processes and cleaning procedures to bring peace of mind to the public. This new normal is an opportunity for everyone and business to embrace a cleaner world than we ever imagined ”.
