1. HYDRANAL - Titrant/Solvent
The two-component reagent was developed to exploit the stability advantage of pure iodine solution in alcohol. In addition, the buffer solution delivers very fast titration performance.
2. Composition
- In the two-component reagent, the Karl Fischer reagents are split into two solutions: the titrant and the solvent.
- HYDRANAL Titrant contains iodine dissolved in alcohol at a precisely defined concentration.
- HYDRANAL Solvent is an alcoholic solution of sulfur dioxide and imidazole.
- The alcohol is methanol for the standard reagent or ethanol for the E type.
- Other solvent reagent types are based on different mixtures so that sample solubility requirements can be met.
3. Advantages of HYDRANAL two-component reagents

- Ideal accuracy for small amounts of water
- High buffering capacity
- Accurate and stable titer
- E type reagent: lower toxicity compared with methanol
- Long shelf life (three years for the titrant, five years for the solvent)
