This one-component volumetric reagent has proven itself in volumetric titration for more than 35 years, in a wide variety of research and industrial applications. Ongoing development work has achieved significant improvements to this reagent.

2. Improved composition
- Hydranal Composite contains all the reactants, including iodine, sulfur dioxide, and the bases imidazole and 2-methylimidazole, dissolved in diethylene glycol monoethyl ether (DEGEE). The addition of 2-methylimidazole together with imidazole improves stability and prevents the formation of crystals that can interfere with the performance of the titrator.
- Crystallization of the reagent is sometimes observed due to the humidity in the air, and also after the reagent is left in the Karl Fischer titration system for a long time. This effect is prevented by the new and improved formulation.
3. Increased titer stability
- When comparing the old and new formulations, it is clear that the new formulation is significantly more stable, with a titer loss of less than 5% per year
compared with around 10% for the old formulation.
- Hydranal Composite is further stabilized by DEGEE as the solvent. The results of tests on the decline of the titer over time are shown in Figure 1.
