- In analytical chemistry, Karl Fischer titration is the classical titration method using coulometric titration or volumetric titration to determine the water content in the sample. It was invented in 1935 by the German chemist Karl Fischer. Today, titration is carried out with an automatic Karl Fischer titrator.

- The basic reaction used to quantify water in the Karl Fischer titration is the oxidation of sulfur dioxide ( SO 2 ) with iodine :

- This basic reaction consumes exactly one mole of water per mole of iodine. Iodine is added to the solution until it is in excess, marking the endpoint of the titration, which can be detected by potentiometric measurement. The reaction is carried out in an alcoholic solution containing a base, which consumes the stored sulfur trioxide and hydroiodic acid that is produced.
