1. Solvents
- The Karl Fischer titration method is applied to many different substances. The nuances of sample properties affect the Karl Fischer titration method in different ways. There are ways to adjust the working conditions so that the sample can be titrated directly, avoiding complex pre-dissolution and pre-extraction steps that are prone to error. In some cases, a solvent should be added.
2. Buffers
- The Karl Fischer reaction depends on pH, with a pH of 5-7,5 being the ideal range.
- Strongly acidic samples slow down the reaction and must be neutralised without causing an alkaline reaction in the working medium before titration begins.
- Strong bases can raise the pH of the working solution if the alkalinity exceeds the buffering capacity of the reagent. The titration endpoint will therefore not be reached. Strong bases must also be neutralised before titration begins.
3. Hydranal moisture test kit
- For rough measurements that do not require a titrator, special test kits can be used to determine water visually according to Karl Fischer.
- The kit includes syringes, a titration bottle and reagents: 2 x 500 mL Hydranal-Solvent E (34730), 100 mL Hydranal-Titrant 5 E (34732) and 100 mL Hydranal Standard 5.0 (34813). The individual containers can be ordered separately
