The birth and evolution of @BactLAB™

Since August 2018, Shimadzu Diagnostics Corporation has used AWS cloud technology (Amazon Web Service cloud) and AI (artificial intelligence) to count colonies quickly and easily, with the aim of contributing to the development of the food hygiene and quality control market overseas. Shimadzu has been developing the "@BactLAB™" application (hereafter referred to as @BactLAB), a solution for companies using CompactDry™, ready-to-use dry culture plates to measure the number of bacteria, which is our main product in the overseas market. We would like to inform you that we have completed the AI update and functional improvements for @BactLAB.

Recently, on 23/9, PacificLAB and the Shimadzu Group also jointly organized the seminar "APPLICATION OF AI TECHNOLOGY IN LABORATORIES COMPLIANT WITH ISO/IEC 17025". At the seminar, guests were informed about the update of this comprehensive application, along with a truly interesting experience on @BactLAB and our ready-to-use dry culture plates.

@BactLAB colony counting image processing technology

Regarding the colony counting process, the first AI model released in August 2018 deployed image processing counting technology combining "image processing" and "machine learning" (Deep Learning) to detect colony positions. In the AI model released in July 2023, the object detection AI network (machine learning model) [YOLOv4] handles position (area) detection and class classification within a single network. It is used as the backbone and is deployed as hard-wired artificial intelligence that allows companies to use it through repeated verification inference, particularly for colony detection (counting).

The object detection AI network [YOLOv4] is called a real-time object detection algorithm. This is short for "You Only Look Once". It has maximized performance and contributed to accuracy and processing speed in colony counting by using the following features:

  • Object detection with a single shot
  • Powerful real-time detection algorithm
  • Processing speed is a major advantage

Feel free to use and enjoy the convenience that this utility brings!

Overview of the @BactLAB service

* Please note that the information in this document may differ slightly from the actual functions because we will continuously provide new services.
* Please note that specifications or performance may change without prior notice.
* BactLAB is an application designed exclusively for CompactDry™ customers.
* We recommend using Wi-Fi when using the smartphone application.
* Depending on the target image, the counting error may be up to 3%.
* A colony count result of "0" does not mean a negative result.
* The cloud image recognition technology used in this service is AI technology for image system recognition, co-developed by Shimadzu Diagnostics Corporation and Hitachi Solutions, Ltd.
* Shimadzu Diagnostics Corporation is not responsible for the analysis results provided by BactLAB.
The use of @BactLAB™ and Global Cloud for data management enables more comprehensive quality control at food production sites. In the future, we are planning to create a system that allows the quality control department (QC/QA department) of a group company to monitor the status of each step of the process at each site in real time. From raw material receiving, processing, manufacturing, production to quality-assured delivery. From there, accelerating the business of food hygiene testing in the overseas market.
